Variational preparation of finite-temperature states on a quantum computer

Abstract The preparation of thermal equilibrium states is important for the simulation condensed matter and cosmology systems using a quantum computer. We present method to prepare such mixed with unitary operators demonstrate this technique experimentally gate-based processor. Our targets generation thermofield double hybrid quantum-classical variational approach motivated by quantum-approximate optimization algorithms, without prior calculation optimal parameters numerical simulation. fidelity generated thermal-equilibrium state smoothly varies from 99 75% between infinite near-zero simulated temperature, in quantitative agreement simulations noisy processor error drawn experiment.

Thermal pure quantum states at finite temperature.

An equilibrium state can be represented by a pure quantum state, which we call a thermal pure quantum (TPQ) state. We propose a new TPQ state and a simple method of obtaining it. A single realization of the TPQ state suffices for calculating all statistical-mechanical properties, including correlation functions and genuine thermodynamic variables, of a quantum system at finite temperature.

We present a quantum algorithm to prepare injective projected entangled pair states (PEPS) on a quantum computer, a class of open tensor networks representing quantum states. The run time of our algorithm scales polynomially with the inverse of the minimum condition number of the PEPS projectors and, essentially, with the inverse of the spectral gap of the PEPS's parent Hamiltonian.
